Discover the Benefits of My Subscription Model
Hey there, wonderful people,
This past week, I implemented a paid subscription model on my Substack, JD’s Ramblings.
Why? Let’s get into that, shall we? As some of you may know already, I despise subscriptions.
Fun fact: the average number of on-demand services per household in Australia rose to 3.4. As per this article, 39% of subscribing households have three or more services. That’s just TV on demand.
Anyway, I took a leap that had me pacing the bus more times than I’d like to admit. Yes, you read that right. I introduced a paid subscription model to JD’s Ramblings. Now, before you hit the ‘unsubscribe’ button in horror, let me explain. I’ve always been the first to grumble about the endless stream of subscriptions popping up like mushrooms after rain. Seriously, how much disposable income do they think we have?
But here's the thing – life has a funny way of teaching us lessons when we least expect it. While doing delivery shifts this weekend, I encountered two individuals at stoplights, their eyes pleading, holding signs for food. It was a stark reminder of when my cupboard was bare, save for enough to ensure my son didn't go to sleep hungry. It reminded me of the power of gratitude. Grateful for a car that, though not new, gets me from A to B. Grateful for friends who, in times of dire need, have been my unexpected safety net.
However, gratitude doesn’t pay the bills, nor does it ease the throbbing pain and swelling in my legs after long shifts due to my accident. That's why I've decided to steer towards paid subscriptions. Not as a barrier but as a bridge. A bridge to better support not just myself but this community we’re building together. My random ramblings will still be free of course.
So, what’s in store for you should you choose to walk this path with me?

The feedback has been nothing short of inspiring.
“Man...that is really cool! I don't say that lightly, either. I feel like it did a great job at critiquing because it pointed out the good, but also what can be improved. Which is like the classic way you are supposed to criticize, right? Start with a complement, tell them what to work on, and end with another complement? Something like that. But it also did a fantastic job of telling me what to improve on and I whole-heartedly agree with the advice and have had those exact same thoughts before. Furthermore, I think it did a wildly good job at figuring out the genres, plots, character developments, etc. I wanted to do 3 distinct story genres to see and the fact that it knew the genres I was going for and knew that the themes matched them or the plots followed traditional plots for that genre was neat. I was pretty shocked it picked up that one was a historical fiction and knew who the real historical figures were.”
That’s the kind of constructive partnership I want to offer you.
